Issue
After restoring the base and add-on images, Windows fails to boot with the following error:
"Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware"
Explanation
This occurs on Windows 7 (and newer) Systems with large amounts of RAM, e.g., 8GB or more, because the partition being restored to is too small.
Windows creates a page file up to two times the amount of RAM installed.
Prior to Imaging Toolkit 9.0.2 the default base partition size is 30GB.
Solution
Increase the partition size that the base image is being restored to, to allow for the increased page file size
Procedure
If ZENworks Imaging (zmg) is being used, the following method can be used to update existing base image files:
Resize the default partition using Image Explorer
- Open your base image using the ZENworks Image Explorer
- Right click on the partition
- Increase the default partition size to incorporate the larger page file
- Save the image
- Test
- Deploy the images to the machine and test to make sure Windows boots.
For wim-based imaging, or to change the partition size for building new zmg base images:
-
Resize the default partition in the Project
- Open your project in Build Console
- In the section Windows > Unattend > Windows Partition Size (GB) change the size to a suitable value, say 60
- Save the project
-
Update Projects.ini
- Run the Integration Wizard, choose the option Configure Zim > Create project lookup file. Ensure that all the required projects are checked, including the project you just updated
- copy the updated projects.ini to the imaging server's zimfiles directory
-
Test
- Deploy the images to the machine and test to make sure Windows boots.
