SCCM 1806 introduced a new feature related to PXE booting. It is now possible to PXE boot a machine without needing Windows Deployment Services (WDS) installed and configured, which means non-server hardware can now be used as a PXE enabled distribution point. More information is available in this Microsoft article

Issue

Zim menu fails to start after the PXE responder option has been selected on the distribution point.

When using the PXE responder rather than WDS, the default SMSTemp folder location has moved:

from: C:\RemoteInstall\SMSTemp

to:     C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\X64\SMSTemp

As a result the zimfiles folder that contains the Zim menu files is no longer in the TFTP root folder structure. The C:\RemoteInstall\SMSTemp folder structure is also deleted.

Solution

We recommend that you make a backup of the C:\RemoteInstall\SMSTemp\zimfiles folder prior to enabling the PXE responder option for an existing distribution point.

Once the PXE responder is enabled on the distribution point you must move the zimfiles folder from either the backup location or the Build Console Integration folder structure to the new PXE responder location:

i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\X64\SMSTemp\zimfiles

The Zim menu will then load successfully from the PXE responder.
