Overview

It is not possible to create partitions on NVMe disks when using x86 WinPE media from the Windows 10 ADK 1709 or 1803 and trying to use diskpart to do so reports:

Virtual Disk Service error
The object is not found.

Note that x64 WinPE media is not affected by this issue. If this error message appears when using x64 media it is more likely that the drive has failed.

Solution

Early reports suggested that this would be fixed in a post-1709 version of the ADK or that applying a cumulative update to the WinPE media would restore the missing files and allow normal operation to resume, however after both internal and customer testing neither of these things appear to be true.

Therefore, the two remaining options available are as follows:

  1. Where possible simply force machines to use the x64 boot.wim, for example by changing them to boot in UEFI mode rather than legacy/BIOS

    or

  2. Use an older version of the ADK to create boot media
